Curriculum PE

Please find our English Curriculum intent, implementation and impact statements below.

Intent

At St James Catholic Primary School, Physical Education (PE) is an integral part of our Curriculum that is inclusive and engages all pupils, in a supportive and challenging environment. We aspire for children to acquire, develop and refine their practical skills and techniques; to further their knowledge and understanding of PE concepts and principles and develop their overall competence, to enjoy, and excel in, a broad range of sports and physical activities.

In partnership with Sunderland AFC, we aim to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities in PE which enable all children to succeed; to enjoy their learning; to be resilient and consistently strive to give their best efforts at all times and achieve their potential and personal best across a variety of sports.

Children participate in competitive sports, as well as festivals, teaching them how to cooperate and collaborate effectively as part of a team and compete appropriately against others, adhering to the principles of fairness and respect; values we hope to embed for future life.

We understand the importance that PE, sport and physical activity have on children’s’ general health, fitness, and mental wellbeing. We provide opportunities, such as swimming, for all children to be physically active for sustained periods of time and we teach children the importance of leading healthy, active lives, making informed and appropriate lifestyle choices in the process.

Implementation

PE at St James Catholic Primary, delivered in large by our partners at Sunderland AFC, provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including invasion games, net & wall games, strike and field games, gymnastics, dance, swimming, and outdoor & adventure.

  • The long-term plan, devised in partnership with Bishop Chadwick Trust, sets out the PE units which are to be taught throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met.
  • Pupils participate in high quality PE lessons each week, covering two sporting disciplines every half term. In addition, children are encouraged to participate in the varied range of extracurricular activities. Lunch time sports clubs are available each day and children can attend after school sport clubs three evenings per week.
  • Children are invited to attend competitive sporting events within the local area. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also mental well-being. These events also develop teamwork and leadership skills and are very much enjoyed by the children.
  • Children participate in workshops covering a variety of sports throughout the year. For example, archery, outdoor and adventure, boxing and skipping, again providing the children with an opportunity to develop, improve their fitness and to try something new.
  • Children in Year 3 swim once a week for 10 weeks during the Spring Term. We repeat the 10-week course later in school for any children that are still unable to swim.
  • We are soon to launch the “Daily Mile”, to help meet the government target of all children being active for at least 60 minutes a day.
Impact

At St James Catholic Primary School, we ensure that our PE curriculum is inclusive and progressive and allows all children the opportunity to acquire and develop fundamental knowledge, understanding, skills and techniques and apply these to a wide variety of different sports and activities. PE lessons are fun, enjoyable and challenging and all children can achieve, to the best of their ability, in a supportive, safe and stimulating environment.  Our pupils are physically active, and this has a positive impact on their learning in the classroom. Children understand how to lead a healthy lifestyle and understand the importance of regular exercise and activity for their physical and mental wellbeing. We aspire for all children to enjoy PE and develop a love of sport and physical activity, which hopefully becomes part of their future life outside of Primary School. Children have opportunities to participate in sport after school and can also represent the school at sporting events at local and county level. In PE, we measure impact with:

  • Regularly liaising with Sunderland AFC staff
  • Pupil questionnaires
  • PE Premium spend analysis
  • Analysis of participation at after school clubs and School Sports Network competitions
  • Assessment data
  • Photo analysis of children’s practical work
