Welcome to our Year 3 Class at St James’
Welcome to Year 3. My name is Mrs Randle and I am the Class Teacher. We are supported by various Teaching Assistants in Year 3 throughout the week. In Year 3, we aim to have fun whilst learning. Our main rule within class is that we always try our best.
Year 3 Noticeboard
- Homework is to be given out each Friday and returned the following Wednesday.
- Spellings are handed out on Fridays and tested the following Friday. Please make sure spelling books are returned each Friday. Should the children misplace their spellings, spares are readily available.
- Accelerated Reader – Reading record books will no longer be handed out, a record will now be kept in school. Children should bring their reading books to school every day in the plastic wallet they’ve been given with their name on. This will allow us to read with the children at various times throughout the week. Wallets should be brought into school each morning and taken home each evening.
- PE in Year 3 is on Wednesdays. Make sure you have your full St James PE kit.
- Please bring fresh water daily.
Autumn in Year 3
Spring in Year
During the Spring term, we have been extremely busy in year 3.
In Science the children have been investigating magnets and forces. We really enjoyed getting outdoors to find magnetic and non-magnetic materials in the playground. We found out that not all metals are magnetic and that the force of friction can impact the way something moves across a surface.
Our geography unit this term has been all about rivers. We particularly loved learning about waterfalls and the causes and effects of floods. We watched some videos of flash floods and the children were keen to find out more about the local ‘Toon Monsoon’ in 2012. We discovered that the floods caused millions of pounds worth of damage and people were even evacuated from their homes. We then wrote a case study using all of our knowledge. In English, our class text was The Orchard Book of Greek Myths. Our favourites have been Pandora’s Box and The Trojan Horse. The children made lots of connections between the myths and more modern stories and games. In maths, we have worked really hard during our measure and fraction’s units. The children have been able to use lots of new vocabulary. We created our own life size ruler to help us understand how many millimetres were in a centimetre.
In DT, we have been looking closely at the carbon footprint of fruit. We tasted lots of tropical fruits and found out which one had the highest carbon footprint. In order to reduce our carbon footprint, we chose to design fruit crumbles using apple or berries because they are grown locally and were in season. We considered which packaging would be appealing to different target markets and and then got to work in the cookery room.
