International School Award

20th May 2025 By lisagillis

We are delighted to announce that St James has been awarded Foundation level of the British Council’s prestigious International School Award in recognition of our work to bring the world into the classroom.

The International School Award celebrates the achievements of schools that do exceptional work in international education. Fostering an international dimension in the curriculum is at the heart of the British Council’s work with schools, so that young people gain the cultural understanding and skills they need for life and work in today’s world.

Living with Dementia, Hebburn
The children in Year 6 were invited to sing at the Alzheimer’s VE Day Party at St Aloysius Church Hall.
This was such a wonderful opportunity for us to celebrate 80 years since Victory in Europe and share this important time with our friends in the parish. Well done Year 6 you brought so much JOY!

A real life Superhero visits Reception and Year 1

7th May 2025 By lisagillis

Our Reception and Year 1 children had a special visit from a real superhero. A police officer came in to talk to us about how he helps people every day. He showed us some of the things he uses to help him in his job such as his handcuffs. He also let us have a look inside of the police car, he made the lights flash and hit the button for the siren. IT WAS REALLY, REALLY, REALLY LOUD! Thank you for being a real life superhero!

Balancing in Reception Class

7th May 2025 By lisagillis

We were delighted to have the road safety team in school to talk to our Reception children about Balance Bikes.
Balance bikes are specially developed for young children and work very simply; children sit and push the ground with their feet. This gives children confidence to learn to balance without having to concentrate on pedalling.
Using Balance Bikes makes the transition on to a two wheeled bike very quick and easy. The children had a great time!

Year 4 at the Oriental Museum

7th May 2025 By lisagillis

Year 4 had a wonderful day at the Oriental Museum in Durham.
In the morning, they took the role of archaeologists to explore life in Ancient Egypt by investigating artefacts and carrying out gallery trails.
After a lovely picnic lunch in the grounds of the museum, the children met a three-thousand-year mummified priestess in her sarcophagus! Additionally, the children took part in a drama session re-enacting the mummification process. Fantastic acting skills from the whole class.
We were so proud of their enthusiasm, teamwork skills and exceptional behaviour. A real credit to St James and well done for such a brilliant day.

Rain Gardens in Year 4

7th May 2025 By lisagillis

This week, Year 4 have been taking part in the ‘Rain Gardens in Schools’ project with Durham Wildlife Trust. Year 4 have been learning about the impact of flooding due to the increase in more intense, wetter weather as well as the effect that substances such as concrete and tarmac has on the environment.
They carried out a range of experiments, creating a set of instructions, an outdoor quiz trail and then created our first rain garden on the school grounds.
As always, we were impressed with the children’s enthusiasm and their dedication to caring for God’s world.

Year 1 at the Discovery Museum

7th May 2025 By lisagillis

Year 1 had a great time at the Discovery Museum. We embarked on a toy hunt to find lots of different toys before making our way to the science exhibition. We enjoyed testing out some scientific theories and experiments.
After lunch we had a fantastic workshop with Fran where we looked at some old and new toy, we even got to hold some of the old toys. Finally we created our own toy in the workshop which we even brought home with us.
What a brilliant day! Well done to all of the children. Their behaviour and manners were exceptional (even on a very hot day!)

We have had a fantastic time celebrating the run up to Easter at St James. We have held our annual KS1 and KS2 Easter discos. We have decorated our Easter Eggs for our competition and hosted our Big Easter Raffle. Easter is so important to us as it marks the resurrection of Jesus and is a symbol of hope and renewal. We hope everyone has a safe and peaceful Easter holiday.

Open the Book – Present the story of Noah’s Ark

4th April 2025 By lisagillis

Thank you to Open The Book part of the Bible Society for presenting the story of Noah to the children today. God told Noah to build a big boat called an ark and then gather two of every kind of animal, one male and one female, to bring with them onto the ark. God explained that he was going to send a great flood to cleanse the earth, and the ark would keep Noah, his family, and all the animals safe. Thank you to everyone involved!
