Welcome to Our Year 3 Class at St. James’

Welcome to Year 3. My name is Mrs Randle and I am the Class Teacher. We are supported by various Teaching Assistants in Year 3 throughout the week. In Year 3, we aim to have fun whilst learning. Our main rule within class is that we always try our best.

Year 3 Noticeboard

  • Homework is to be given out each Friday and returned the following Wednesday.
  • Spellings are handed out on Fridays and tested the following Friday. Please make sure spelling books are returned each Friday. Should the children misplace their spellings, spares are readily available.
  • Accelerated Reader – Reading record books will no longer be handed out, a record will now be kept in school. Children should bring their reading books to school every day in the plastic wallet they’ve been given with their name on. This will allow us to read with the children at various times throughout the week. Wallets should be brought into school each morning and taken home each evening.
  • PE in Year 3 is on Wednesdays. Make sure you have your full St James PE kit.
  • Please bring fresh water daily.
  • We pray every day in school. Please help your child to become familiar with our prayers here Little Book of Prayers Lower KS2

Autumn Term in Year 3

We are very excited to welcome the children back after the summer break and to begin our Autumn Term learning journey together. This term is full of exciting topics and questions that will inspire curiosity and creativity across the curriculum.

In English, we will be reading The True Story of the Three Little Pigs, a tale told from the wolf’s perspective. This will give us the chance to think about different viewpoints in storytelling and explore how the same story can change depending on who is telling it. The children will build up to writing their very own twisted tale.

After this, we will be diving into the book Stone Age Boy. This story will help us explore life in the past while also giving us opportunities to practise our writing skills. This text links perfectly with our history unit, as we step back in time to learn all about the Stone Age. We will discover how people lived, what tools they used, what they ate, and how life has changed so much since then.

In science, we will be learning all about rocks. The children will explore different types of rocks, how they are formed, and their uses. We will even carry out investigations to test their properties, helping us become young geologists.

In RE, we will be asking the big question: What makes a house a home? This will encourage the children to think deeply about family, belonging, and what really matters when we talk about the idea of “home.”

In maths, we are starting the year with a focus on place value. Understanding place value is the foundation for so much of our mathematical learning, so we will be working on recognising the value of digits in numbers, ordering and comparing numbers, and representing them in different ways.

It promises to be a busy and exciting term full of discovery, creativity, and learning. We are really looking forward to seeing the children develop their knowledge and skills, and we can’t wait to celebrate their achievements with you as the term unfolds.

Tips on how to help your child’s learning during the Autumn Term:

  • If you would like to support your child’s learning further, we encourage regular reading at home (even just 10 minutes and day). Talk about the story, characters and what might happen next, so children build comprehension skills.
  • Times table practice is really important in year 3 and we focus on the 3,4 and 8 times tables. Little and often is the key and there are lots of apps, songs or games available to use. Practise in the car, on the way to school, at breakfast time, in the shower.
  • Involve your child in real life maths through measuring and weighing, telling the time and counting money.

Spring Term in Year 3

As we begin the spring term, our DT unit focuses on the carbon footprint of fruit. We will design a fruit crumble, considering packaging and ingredients that will reduce our carbon footprint.

Our geography unit is all about the journey of a river and the water cycle. The children learn about local flooding and explore waterfalls: learning lots of new vocabulary.

In science we will investigate forces and magnets; testing if all metals are magnetic.

We study journeys in RE and we ask the BIG question ‘Is life a journey?’. We begin to recognise the liturgical calendar and the meaning behind each season.

In English we will write our own stories inspired by The Great Kapok Tree. We will then move on to writing leaflets, focussing on the importance of subheadings and writing in paragraphs. The children will enjoy researching and planning out their ideas. Our maths work has been all about multiplication and the children are gaining a lot of confidence with their times tables. Next, we will complete our length and perimeter unit and then move onto working on fractions. Year 3, love to work outdoors so we will be trying to get out to enjoy lots of our lessons in the playground.

Tips on how to help your child’s learning during the Spring Term:

  • Encourage your children to continue practising the 2, 5 and 10 times tables, as well as the 3, 4 and 8 times tables. Times Table Rock Stars or Top Marks are great resources to do this.
  • Support your child with spelling practise by segmenting the words on their list and saying them aloud slowly.
  • Talk about the importance of our carbon footprint with your children. Think about any ways your family could reduce their carbon footprint. Take a look at this website https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/z4g3f8
  • If you remember the 2012 'Thunder Thursday' flooding in Newcastle you could chat to your children about what your experience was.

Lastly, read, read, read. Enjoying books with your family!
